Check whether you need to live on campus at Texas State
Texas State requires you to live on campus if you graduated high school within the 12 months before your admission semester. Check whether a published exemption applies before paying an off-campus lease fee.

Read the policy for your admission term
The requirement applies regardless of age or completed credit hours, including dual credit. Texas State repeats the 12-month rule in its Fall 2027–Spring 2028 housing contract.
Get an exemption decision before signing
You can request an exemption if you plan to live with a parent or legal guardian whose permanent address is within 50 driving miles of the San Marcos campus. The policy also lists exemptions for married or parenting students, qualifying disability or medical circumstances, and students admitted and enrolled in another campus or online degree program. If your exemption requires approval, wait for the decision before committing to an off-campus lease.
Compare room charges by semester
Check which rooms are available to you and add a dining budget. Use the rate for your academic year when you compare with an off-campus quote.
